Development of Chinese Steel Ball Manufacturing Technology(Ⅰ)

The development of Chinese steel ball manufacturing technology can be divided into four stages.

The first stage happened before 80s. Since 50s, ZWZ, HRB and LYC introduced steel ball manufacturing technology of the Soviet Union comprehensively, creating a large-scale production history of Chinese bearing steel ball, laying the foundation for Chinese future development of steel ball technology. Until 80s, in the period of around 20 years, Chinese steel ball manufacturing process is basically the model of Soviet. The equipment mainly dominated by the Soviet Union, but also the German. Entering 60s, SMTW began jointly developed the first batch of the national production of 3M4630 grinding machine with Shanghai Steel ball factory. In the 1970s, the biggest technological improvement was to test and study grinding process. At that time, Sichuan Jintang bearing factory introduced Romanian steel ball grinding processing equipment, which caused the attention of the ZWZ and Shanghai counterparts. Under the support of leaders of the bearing bureau, a study of two alloy cast iron plates for processing steel ball is developed. The two steel ball factories use their own advantages and the cooperation of casting aspects, testing the grinding plate for the ball filing processing successfully. After the old equipment was improved successfully, the light mill was designed and produced. A breakthrough in this process greatly reduced the steel ball blank machining cost, improving the surface quality and precision of the file processing. More important, this breakthrough gave people a revelation: technology needs constant development; there is development, there is quality and effectiveness.

The second stage was for the period from 1981 to 1985, that was, during the "65" plan period. Due to the quality of Chinese bearings, especially noise, obviously lagging behind abroad. Bearings can not be exported, and motors should be replaced with foreign bearings to export. The delegation went abroad for an inspection, got an concluding comment: motor bearings must go on a combination vibration test. Steel balls must use G10, using lapping technology instead of polishing process. For this, the bearing bureau organized the steel ball factory technical personnel and formulated G10 steel ball project. The project was shared by Shanghai Steel Ball Factory and Hubei Steel Ball Factory. They used large-cycle super-lapping process instead of traditional polishing technology to improve the surface quality and spherical precision of steel balls. It eliminated the polishing process, making the quality of the ball on a new level, using combination method to achieve the low-noise requirements at the time. This result is widely promoted in the industry. At the same time, in order to speed up the development of bearings and steel ball technology and keep up with international standards as soon as possible, Shanghai Bearing Company stepped up to contacts, visits and negotiations with foreign bearing company. And in January 1985, they sent the first batch of personnel to Japan NTN to train steel ball manufacturing technology. The aim was to fully grasp international advanced production technology and management experience, catching up with the international level as soon as possible.
